Rafael Nadal has won his 18th Grand Slam title and 12th French Open by beating Dominic Thiem 6-3, 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 at Roland Garros on Sunday. The Spanish tennis player has become the first man or woman to win the same Grand Slam title for the 12th time in his/her playing career after beating Thiem.

In a 53-minute first set of the final, Thiem had broken first and took a 3-2 lead. However, Nadal made a good comeback to break the sixth game and took away the next three to win the opening set. Although Thiem managed to take the second set, the next two sets were pretty one-sided with Nadal winning both and clinching the coveted trophy at the Roland Garros.

“I want to say congratulations to Dominic. I feel sorry as he deserves to win it as well,” Nadal was quoted as saying by AFP.

“But he has every chance in the future. He has unbelievable talent for the sport and I want to encourage him for the future. It’s a dream to win again, an incredible moment. When I first played here in 2005 I never thought I would be still playing here in 2019. It’s very special for me.”

It was a repeat of the final of the previous edition of the Grand Slam as Nadal had defeated Thiem in 2018 final as well. This is the 18th Grand Slam win for the 33-year-old tennis star from Spain. Only Federer is ahead of the Spaniard with 20 major titles while Djokovic is with 15 titles. With the victory in the final, Nadal now has 93 wins and only two losses to his name in the French Open. Nadal had previously won in the years 2005 to 2008, 2010 to 2014, 2017 and 2018.
