KSS Shooting Championship | Om Prakash Mitharwal, Vijay Kumar and Abhidnya Patil grab double gold medals

Om Prakash Mitharwal, Vijay Kumar and Abhidnya Patil have each won two gold medals at 18th KSS Memorial Shooting Championship in Delhi. Mitharwal edged past Omkar Singh by just 1 point to win the gold while Kumar marked his return with a successful campaign with Haryana, winning two gold medals.

2018 Commonwealth Games and ISSF World Cup medallist Om Prakash Mitharwal edged out 2010 CWG gold medalist Omkar Singh by just one point to clinch the gold in 50m free pistol at the 18th KSS Memorial Shooting Championship in Delhi on Wednesday. London Olympic gold medallist Vijay Kumar also bagged two gold medals for Haryana in the 25m center fire pistol individual and team event.

Mitharwal, who won the World Cup mixed team gold medal in the 10m air pistol category, scored 560 to claim the gold. However, Omkar, representing the Navy, stayed behind his back with a score of 559. Gurpal Singh bagged the bronze with a score of 553.

The Army marksmanship unit comprising of Om Prakash, Gurpal Singh and Jain Singh were in red hot form as they topped the charts with 1654 and grabbed the gold in the 50m free pistol team event. Air Force’s Monu Tomar lead the charge as his teammates Ravinder and Deepak Malik aided in scoring 1641 and took the second spot. The Navy trio – Omkar Singh, Saurav Malik and Yogesh Singh – shot 1626 to get bronze.

In the 25m center fire pistol, Vijay Kumar had a few nervy moments but managed to top 2010 CWG gold medallist Gurpreet Singh by one point. With 583 points, he grabbed the gold in a nail-biting encounter. The third spot was occupied by BSF’s Mahinder Singh, who also scored 582, but finished third by virtue of his shots during the final round. The 10m air pistol women saw young gun Abhidnya Patil of Maharashtra take the gold with 240.5 ahead of former World No.1 and veteran shooter Heena Sidhu, while Punjab’s Harveen Sarao claimed the third spot.

In the junior category of the 10m air pistol event, Patil continued her momentum as she took her second gold of the day while SSB’s Yogita got the silver and Haryana’s Nayani Bharadwaj ranked third on the podium.
