The Boxing Federation of India has finally announced that their 2 year long project of introducing a franchise-based league could launch in July-August this year, although tentatively. The tournament, expected to run three weeks, would be in a caravan format where teams will visit from city to city.

With the franchise-based league gaining tremendous prominence in sports like cricket, kadaddi, and football over the last decade, BFI had started putting a plan in place two years back in 2017. However, after many complications, the league might see the light of the day later this year in July and August, the BFI announced on Tuesday.

The federation informed that they had floated a tender for the commercial and organising rights and the tournament could start after the elections in the country.

"We are trying to organise it after the elections are over. In July-August," said Atul Pande, Managing Director of Sportzlive, which also owns the rights Premier Badminton League, reported PTI.

The league would obviously be having some of the best pugilists from the circuit with names like newly-crowned Asian Champion Amit Panghal, Shiva Thapa, and veteran L Sarita Devi already confirming their name alongside foreign boxers.

"A lot of Indian players have already signed up for the league. We are also in process of signing up international boxers to have mixed men and women international team," Pande said.

"The tournament will run for three weeks and the team owners, title sponsors and everything will be finalised later. It will follow a caravan format, similar to other leagues in the India. We want the elections to get over because the interested franchises will make their final decision only after the results are announced," he added.

With Star Sports already roping in as the official broadcaster of the event, Pande revealed that their target was to reach 10 crore viewers in the first year of television and 20 crores of the digital platform.
