Indian Grand Prix | Manjit Singh Chahal and Lili Das star in fourth leg

Haryana’s Manjit Singh Chahal and West Bengal’s Lili Das were the top-performing athletes in the fourth and final leg of Indian Grand Prix Series in Panchkula. Manjit won the gold medal in men’s 1500m race while Lili grabbed the first position in women’s 1500m by overtaking PU Chitra. 

Manjit, who had clinched a gold medal in the 800m event in the Asian Games, went past Ajay Kumar Saroj and Rahul to get past the finishing line first by clocking 3.45.37 which is under the 3.46.00 qualification guideline of Athletics Federation of India. Saroj also finished under that timing and won the silver medal while Rahul got bronze in the same event. 

Lili won gold for West Bengal with a timing of 4.13.53 in the women’s 1500m as she edged out Kerala’s Chithra who clocked 4.13.58. Usha Sharma from Haryana clocked 5.03.00 and finished third in the category.

Kerala’s VK Vismaya and Rajiv Arokia of Tamil Nadu clinched gold medals respectively in the women’s and men’s 200m running on the last day of the competition at Tau Devi Lal Stadium in Panchkula. Muhammad Anas stood second in the same category as he clocked 21.15 in comparison to Arokia’s 20.74. Lovepreet Singh remained at the third place with a time of 21.59. 

Vismaya won the women’s 200m race with a timing of 23.8 while Karnataka’s NS Inchara claimed silver and Anjali Devi finished at the third position. 

Sharmila Kumari was the star athlete in the field events as she registered her personal best in women’s javelin throw with 56.36m.
